Impurity: Of lust and war

I’d prefer “Of busts and whores”, but that’s just me. Would that album be about Hindu mythology and have such a cool cover? Probably not. But it would be about juicy boobs and sloppy prostitutes, which is always good subject matter for any medium. Then again, pornogrind is just about the worst idea ever so perhaps these tattooed, underfed and un-tanned individuals made the right choice. Kumbhakarna 1, Shyla Stylez 0.
Impurity (who share a band name with 5 other bands from Israel to Brazil) have a rotten, evil sound that brings to mind Incantation and “Gateways…” era Morbid Angel. Or even the new Paganizer. Mid-paced to slow, grinding death metal that was made to be grimy. No tech death clean production here, friends, instead the double bass sounds waterlogged and the guitars have a bowel-scraping churn. And the monstrous low growls are right up front, kicking piles of Krishnafied ass. Go India, by way of Florida!
Most of the tracks stick at the same punishing tempo, occasionally speeding up when the revilers start a-scourgin’, or slowing down when the graves get ashen. If you quickly get fed up with mid-paced death metal, then stay away. I myself have a weak spot for albums like “Back from the grave” and could easily sit all day and listen to grooving riffs backed by pounding drums and low growls. If that IS a job, hire me now. Seriously, given that the economy needs a kick in the ass, let’s create some jobs that involve listening to metal. While building clean energy plants around the country. Dark, Satanic clean energy plants. Lucifer, bringer of light, power my windmill!
Back to Impurity. Their lyrical themes, and some interludes, add quite a bit to what could have been a meh – sterpiece. For lyric samples, check out nifty shit like this from “Prayer to the eidolon”
Oh, masterful and merciless, give them what they desire
For they crave your blade rooted in their mouths
And their innards scattered across the ground
Yeah! They don’t crave shitty White Castle burgers like most motherfuckers, these people want a blade right in their mouths. Onward. The keyboard-laden interludes, like most death metal bands, are pretty stupid and wouldn’t sound out of place in an ‘80’s horror movie. But they do break up the onslaught of similarity.
A score of 7 out of 10 reflects my personal enjoyment of mid-paced death metal, a grittier production when it comes to this particular style, intelligent lyrical content, and deities with many arms. If you ain’t down with the above, I wouldn’t want to be at your house when the fucken Reviler comes to town. Your rear will be getting scourged bigtime.
